Much can be done to better the life of the animals we shelter with the generous help of regular volunteers. You may be able to help an animal feel more comfortable in the shelter environment, with the logistics of general care, with your specialized skill, or help an animal become more adoptable and find a permanent home.

Volunteers are the everyday life-blood of Stray Hearts Animal Shelter of Taos. Volunteers enable animals to receive extra attention, training, and care that would otherwise be cost-prohibitive for our shelter. Volunteers help with special events and fundraising events that are crucial to our continuance. Volunteers also help with building and maintenance to ensure the highest quality of care possible for these animals. We cannot thank our volunteers enough. They are the selfless beings that give of their crucial time and energy to help make an animal's life better. On behalf of all of us who care and all the animals in need, we thank you!

Dog Walkers

Do you love dogs but don't have room for one? Do you have cats who don't get along with dogs? Just looking to volunteer? Then dog walking is a great way to bring them into your life.

It is as simple as putting one foot in front of the other. Walking a dog is not just for physical exercise, but essential to the well being of its mental health. Stray Hearts is dependent upon its volunteer team of Dog Walkers to ensure that all our animals have human contact, physical exercise, and mental stimulation on a regular basis. Dog walking will provide you with a very flexible opportunity to help the dogs and yourself! Beginner Dog Walker training is provided to all dog walkers, and Advanced Dog Walking training is offered as well.

Cat Socialization

Obviosly, cats do not need walking - however, for a cat to stay healthy and adoptable, it needs human interaction. As cats can be aloof, it is important that they are comfortable with human contact. By spending time with the cats and kittens, you will be instrumental in helping them get a forever home. This is a wonderful opportunity to get involved your child involved, as well. Cat Socialization training is given to volunteers every month.

Event Volunteers

You have probably seen an Event Volunteer already; at Albertsons or Cid's asking for items needed at the shelter. Or maybe you bought a couple of raffle tickets to help Stray Hearts. You may have showed up at the TCA when we had the screening of Diva Dogs: Pit Bulls on Wheels as a fundraiser and awareness-raiser. No experience is necessary and we welcome all the help we can get!
