As a longtime community resource, Stray Hearts Animal Shelter will happily continue to work with Taos County residents and help them with any resources we can.

However, effective July 1, 2023, Stray Hearts will no longer accept animals delivered specifically by Taos County ACOs (Animal Control Officers).

From an economic perspective, our longstanding contract with Taos County resulted in nearly 60% of our annual animal intakes, yet contributed only 11% of our revenue - the latter which is vital to provide care, food, sheltering and medical services for these animals. This was not a sustainable arrangement for Stray Hearts.

Most importantly, Stray Hearts will pivot to a community-based sheltering model which does not warehouse animals, but instead seeks to engage with the community to address the larger scope animal issues facing the Taos region.
