Stray Hearts and Town of Taos Mutually Agree to Decline Contract Renewal

6 September 2023
Stray Hearts Board of Directors

With careful consideration by our Board of Directors, and after a series of healthy, productive conversations with Taos Town officials, Stray Hearts and the Town of Taos mutually agree to not renew our Annual Contract (TT-19-126), effective 6 September 2023.

This pause in service will allow Stray Hearts a better opportunity of realizing its short term (as well as its long term) goal(s) of a more controlled, sustainable shelter, specifically housing a number of animals that matches our facility’s maximum capacity.

Earlier this summer, Stray Hearts began the move towards a Community-Based Sheltering model.

Part of that strategic vision included a shelter operating at 100% capacity (for the last several years, Stray Hearts has operated at or above 185% capacity).

Operating at a more manageable capacity also allows us to better meet our goals of being a Socially Conscious Animal Shelter, including continuing to provide quality medical care, increased quality time with staff and volunteers, reduced length of stays, and lowered transport rates to other shelters.
