Serving Taos and the surrounding communities, Stray Hearts offers safe shelter, medical care, and adoption pathways while promoting responsible pet ownership through education, resources, and community outreach.

Socially Conscious Animal Community

STRAY HEARTS Animal Shelter, d/b/a The Humane Society of Taos is proud to join the Socially Conscious Sheltering movement and has adopted its core principles as its own organizational values.

The time has come for animal welfare professionals and the communities who support them to look beyond “no-kill” for the future of our industry. The Socially Conscious Animal Community concept is based on respectful treatment of animals, placing every healthy and safe animal, transparency and leadership, thoughtful public policy, and safe communities.

The cornerstone for Socially Conscious Animal Communities is Socially Conscious Sheltering: a compassionate, transparent, and thoughtful model outlining how animal shelters and rescues can best support vulnerable animals in their care and in their community.
